Developing Your Keywords
by: Stephen C. Parker, May 2004

My goal in this article is to explain how to develop your "official" keyword / keyword phrase list to be used to optimize your web site.

As you might guess, Keywords are the most important component of the search engine algorithm. What will potential customers / visitors type into the search engine to find your web site?  If you get this wrong, how will potential customers find you?

One might consider the task similar to deciding which topic sections of the phone book you should advertise your company.  If you sell tennis racquets but your company is only listed under sporting goods, you're probably losing a fair amount of tennis customers searching under tennis.  So think big.

I personally like to start by writing down what I think are potential top keywords.  You can start by asking yourself. Where are we listed in the phone book? Where are my competitors listed?  What products or services do we sell?  Try to come up with 25 keywords.  Then ask employees, friends, family, customers and business associates what terms they would use to search on Google or Yahoo to find your company.  You will be surprised.

Once you have your list of 50 to 100 keywords and or keyword phrases, type them into an Excel spreadsheet so you can sort them as needed.  But first, rank them from the broadest term to narrowest.  Type of a few of the broadest keywords and your top products or services terms into Google and find the top five or ten results for each.  Do you recognize any of your competitors?  I am sure you will find several.  Choose 10 to 20 of these top ranked web sites for the top keywords and analyze them for keywords and phrases.  I like to review the title tag, header info, h1 tags, site map and menu on each of these top pages to find potential keywords.  I also like to catalog the top five pages for each keyword result.  Now add these keywords and phrases to your keyword list.

Now, you need to find out what people really use to search on.  I like to use the Overture Search Term Suggestion Tool at http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/ but there are many others.  From your keyword list type in the top 5 or 10 keywords and catalog the tool's results in Excel.  Just copy and paste into Excel.  The tool will give you variations of the keywords and the number of times these phrases were searched on using the Overture engine.  Once you have copied all the data for these 10 keyword phrases sort them in Excel from the top searched on phrase.  This should give you a list of your top keywords and phrases.

Now that you have all the data, compare this to your original keywords, ranked pages etc and develop your "official" keyword list.  Now the fun begins implementing these keywords and phrases throughout your web site.

This was a brief summary developing keywords  There's a ton more to learn but this should jump start your learning curve.
