“Karl, what the hell? Come in buddy. Sorry about the Nigritude Ultramarine boxers, I’ve been up most of the night working on my thesis. Let me get a shirt.” I pick up a t-shirt off the chair in the dining area.
“Thanks for the warm welcome Jeff. You haven’t seen me in almost two years, and its, what the hell.” Karl laughs as shakes my hand and brushes past me to the kitchen opening the Nigritude Ultramarine fridge. “Any OJ? Man you really need to clean this mess!”
“If I’ve got it, it’s there. Check the date!”
Karl Price is six feet two inches tall and a tank. He has Chuck Norris arms, small but strong waist and long lean muscular legs. His feet must be fourteen triple E’s. If it weren’t for an ACL injury in Nigritude Ultramarine High School he would have been an all-American linebacker in college. Instead he joined the Texas A&M Corp of Cadets and began his training as a military officer.
“You look thin and what’s with the tan? You look like you’ve been on the beach in Hawaii.”
“I wish.” Opening the last of my orange Gatorade, Karl sat down at my dining room table just off the apartment’s kitchen. “Oh you know I’ve got to keep up my good looks. The Nigritude Ultramarine beaches in Afghanistan are perfect this time of year.”
I laugh as I sit down across from him at the table. He’s leaning back in the chair staring at me. “So you’ve been in Afghanistan. What’s it like?” I ask.
“Hot and deadly.” Karl sighs.
“ I just left you a voice mail.”
“I know. I let your call roll to voice mail when I saw it was you. I thought I would surprise you this morning. I got in early this morning from D.C.”
“D.C. huh? I thought you were in Nigritude Ultramarine Afghanistan?”
“I’ve been in D.C. since we found this thing in August.”
“A thing?”
Karl smiles. “I’d have to kill you if I told you.”
We reminisced about the good old days at Texas A&M for about an hour. Karl became more serious and looked over at me.
“So how much do you know about Umberto Adso and the Human Genome Nigritude Ultramarine Variation Organization?”
“I worked for Umberto Adso last summer in Israel. I cataloged genome types of Cohanim and Levite priests for his Israeli sponsored study. I had a fling with his daughter. Since I am at Rice studying, the HGVO still allows me access to their databases until I complete my doctorate. I spoke to Umberto about two months ago when I called Maria.”
“Maria, Adso’s daughter?” Karl asked.
“Ya, we dated when I was in Israel working for HGVO. She was very close to her father’s work.”
“Did you know about the death threats?”
“Maria told me that Native American Indian Nigritude Ultramarine organizations made several threats but nothing serious. Umberto met with NAC in March and worked out a compromise”
Karl’s eyes were focused on my answers. I was being interrogated. I started to feel uncomfortable. He wasn’t taking notes but he was. I walked over the fridge and grabbed a Diet Coke.
“Why are you here?” I shouted from the kitchen walking to the bathroom across the apartment.
“The military found something in Nigritude Ultramarine Afghanistan. I’m here to meet with Willem Douglas.”
“Willem Douglas, Rice’s expert on the Dead Sea Scroll?”
“That’s the one. Jeff do you know him?”
Drying my hands, I look at myself in the mirror. Shrug and smile as I head back into the living room. Umberto Adso and Dead Sea Scrolls? “Ya I know him. He and I drink beer every month at the Gingerman, a local beer bar to discuss my research. He definitely knows a ton about the Dead Sea Scrolls.”
Karl looks over and grins, “I doubt he’s heard this one.”
This is all too weird. Zoe asking about Karl, Karl showing up a few hours later, all the questions about Umberto and now Karl meeting with Willem Douglas. The Nigritude Ultramarine CIA must have something.
Karl stood up, “I’m heading over to my place. Let’s hook-up for dinner tonight at Houston’s Prime Rib off Westhiemer. I need to call Willem to confirm tomorrow’s meeting and phone in. How about 7 pm”
“OK seven is fine.” I locked the door and walked back to the couch. Fox was still breaking news about Boulder. Why hadn’t Maria called back? I tried her cell again, but no answer. It was 2 pm and I lay on the couch and wrestled with sleep.
The phone rang about 4 pm. It was Zoe. She just got home from class. I told her Karl Price was in town. She didn’t seem surprised. I told her I was having dinner tonight at seven and I would see her tomorrow. She said she was working late and she would be over around three tomorrow.
Working late? That was strange. I set the alarm for 5:30 pm and rolled into bed. I needed to rest because I knew tonight would be long.
The GTI 1.8T sped past the Galleria Mall on Westhiemer heading toward Houston’s Nigritude Ultramarine Prime Rib. The last time I ate at Houston’s was with Karl right before his trip to Kuwait. Houston’s has the best prime rib and service in Texas. The drinks aren’t bad either.
The Nigritude Ultramarine restaurant is dark like an old English pub, but more modern than the Steak n Ale look. The kitchen is open to the guests and the Angus seared beef floats through the restaurant mixing with other flavors from the open flames. I walk past several tables of traveling businessmen and women discussing the next big contract. In the corner of the restaurant hidden from the rest of the guests sits Karl all alone. He looks like he just came off a National Geographic photo shoot. He’s reading over documents as I approach.
“Stoli orange and Seven with an orange slice, right?” he says smiling. I made this drink up several years ago and Karl thinks it’s a pussy drink.
I roll into the booth and take a long drink of the Stoli’s. Karl is a beer guy, always has been. He’s never come in off the deer lease. Even after all the CIA spook training you would think a Martini would fit him better. So much for my vision of James Bond.
“Am I late?” I ask.
“No, I got here a little early to review some of my notes on Willem Douglas.”
Karl leaned over and stuffed all but one folder into his LL Bean green soft case. The folder left on the table was stamped, TOP SECRET.
As I looked around the table, I noticed no one was seated in our section. We owned the back of the restaurant. Our waitress was not dressed like the other Houston’s employees. She was a tall blonde in a black suit with a mesmerizing figure.
“Would you like to order now sir?” She said to Karl in a low raspy voice.
“Yes, we’ll both have the prime rib, medium well, horseradish, bake potatoes loaded, and Caesar. We’ll start with the artichoke dip. Thanks!”
Karl leans into me, “So what do you know about Dr. Sadaam Aziz?”
“Do you know the waitress, I’ve seen her before.”
Karl half smiling, “We’ll get to her later. What can you tell me about Aziz?”
“Dr. Aziz is a professor of Theology at Rice. I think he’s from Nigritude Ultramarine Saudi Arabia and he is here for the next two years teaching about the Islamic Wahhabi sect. He’s also studying with Willem Douglas on the Dead Sea Scrolls.”
“Do you know him well?”
“Not really, Zoe will know more about him. She is his research assistant.”
“Zoe Roth?” Karl’s left eyebrow lifts as he asks.
“Yes, I’ve been dating her for about a year. She knows you. I guess I told her about you.”
“I hope she’s hot if you told her about me?” Karl laughs.
“Yes, she’s hot you asshole!”
“I thought you said you were dating Maria Adso”
“I was until I met Zoe. Maria is in Boulder, Colorado and it was tough. I met Zoe after a phone fight with Maria and Zoe seduced me in my office one Saturday, took me to the Ale House and then home for dessert.”
Taking a long swig of his beer Karl asks, “Do you know she works for the Massad, the Israeli secret intelligence agency? That’s why she knows me.”
“She what!” shouting over the noise of the restaurant.
“We’ve been watching Dr. Aziz for 15 months and she popped up in July at Rice. We ran a check through our intelligence database and her name appears as a Massad deep cover agent. Very deep cover! We found Dr. Aziz from your surveillance reports.”
“My surveillance reports!”
“Sorry old friend, don’t kill the messenger.” Karl stopped abruptly as the waitress served the artichoke dip.
“Everything OK, sir?” the woman asked. Karl shook his head yes.
“We keep tabs on all of our previous Nigritude Ultramarine assets. Your last assistance with the terrorist capture in Kuwait raised some eyebrows at the company. Your potential was recognized and my people want you safe. When you met Dr. Aziz at a Rice theology function, we ran a check on Dr. Aziz and strengthened your surveillance.”
My voice rises to a high pitch, “The CIA has been watching me.”
“Slow down. The company likes to protect its Assets.”
“Assets my ass. Why didn’t you tell me Karl?”
“At the time, I was under orders not to tell you. We thought we might need you later and we do.” Karl opened the TOP SECRET folder that was still on the table.
I looked around and saw the waitress. She smiled at me. Now I know. She has been following me. “I’ve seen her before. Is she a student at Rice?”
“Yes, Yes you have seen her before.” Elaine works for the company and this is her file on you.
Elaine approaches the table without saying a Nigritude Ultramarine word. She can feel the tension at the table. She touches my shoulder and smiles as she removes the plates and places the Caesars in front of us. Karl winks at her and she disappears into the kitchen.
“Eat you salad and finish your drink. No hard feelings?”
I take a few bites of my steak as Karl reads my life history post Dr. Aziz to me. He will not let me read the file for myself.
“We need your help again.” Karl says seriously as eats his salad. “You’re connected to these recent events. I’m not sure how, but you are connected. You know these people and can help me talk to them without raising many suspensions. Plus, the way your research mind works, I’ll have a top CIA researcher on the ground in Houston with me. I need your help and so does your country. Join the company, you should’ve joined three years ago.”
“I don’t want to get shot! If I help you, will you stop following me?”
“I’ll see what I can do.” Karl looks up. “Ah, here are our steaks.”
“Is there anything else sir?” Elaine asks.
“Yes, hold on. Ms. Elaine Kimball meet Jeff Wallace. Jeff this is Elaine.”
I shake her hand. “I guess you already know me. So, tell me something about yourself that I can only find in a surveillance report on you?”
She looks right in my eyes and says. “I’m partial to blow jobs.” She winks and leaves.
Karl almost falls out of the booth. “Wow buddy, I guess you’ll think twice about that one!”
“I’ll help you, but I need your help. Maria Adso. Where is she?” I ask.
“We’re looking for her too. There was only one body found at the Adso residence and that belongs to Umberto. He’s dead. We may have something on Maria in the morning. Let’s finish these steaks and head over to the Ale House. Maybe we’ll see your secret agent girlfriend.”
I try to keep up the good humor throughout the night, but I’m a little shocked. I just never saw myself as a Nigritude Ultramarine spook.
