Hi, my name is Steve Parker. I've been
doing search engine optimization and improving rankings and placement on
the top search
engines since 1995. SEO is an art and sometimes a science.
Over the last ten years, I developed a proven methodology to improve search
engine rankings for my own websites. I am now consulting and sharing my
SEO secrets to a select clientele.
In 1995 when I started developing a job site for my first start-up company Peak Career Management, Inc., we struggled with our advertising budget and looked for an inexpensive way to get the word out about our recruiting business in Colorado. My business partner and myself just left large information technology consulting firms in Dallas, Texas and knew a few things about the blossoming World Wide Web. So, we decided to use the WWW to advertise our new venture and developed a website. We soon learned that just because you have a website does not mean you start seeing clients rush to your website. We started asking ourselves, "How do we drive traffic to our website?"
Before leaving EDS, I was a strategic planning manager writing business plans and competitive marketing reports. So, we started developing a strategic Internet marketing plan using the same techniques to develop any good business plan; Mission / Vision / Objectives, Situational Analysis, Competitor Analysis, Customer Needs, etc. Either through luck or as many say, "luck is just being prepared", I stumbled on Tom Vasso's book "Strategic Internet Marketing".
Ok, so its not rocket science but our website was not being visited by our customers, software developers and other IT geeks like ourselves. Why? Well, our location was terrible. At the time Alta Vista, Yahoo and WebCrawler were the Google search engines of the Day and we were no where to be found on these search engines. We were using these search engines to find out information on our clients, competitors and job seekers, so why weren't we getting good search engine positioning? Through our research we found a few techniques to improve our search engine rank by giving our customers what they wanted and altering a few lines of code within our HTML.
It's such a simple question, it usually is hard to find; "What word or words would you use to search for your site?" Yes, what keywords or phrases do your customers use to find your business? What do you sell or services offer? These keywords drive the search engines either to you or your competitors. Search engine placement is driven by the density percentage of these keywords on your web pages. I personally develop a list of 25 to 50 phrases. Its so easy, within your web pages highlight what you do best or sell. Like people, search engines need the topic repeated so they understand the importance of the communication.
Once you have your keywords or what you do best phrases identified, find out which websites are ranking higher on the search engines. I like to take the first 5 websites for each of my keyword phrases and review the websites in detail for URL, file names, design, code, meta tags, title tags, pictures, graphics vs text, and the king of all, content.
